Tell us a little about yourself, your name, age, what you did as a career and anything family oriented etc., if you choose?
My name is Charlie Mace and 91 years “young”. When I first left school, I went to a Chartered Accountants in London in 1948. I left soon afterwards to become a fireman on the Railway.
In 1951 I joined the Royal Air Force for three years until 1954 where I met my wife, Pam who was also in the RAF. We were both demobbed in 1954 and married in July of that year.
In 1956 joined the Surrey Fire Brigade until 1965 when we decided to emigrate to Australia. We left England in October of 1965 with 5 children bound for Adelaide.
At school after the war there were no structured art classes but I could always draw. Whilst I was in the Fire Brigade in England, I was introduced to oil painting by a fellow firie, which started me on the road to painting
I’ve tried all mediums except charcoal but prefer acrylic and pastel. My subject matter is wide but I like transport subjects such as trains, planes and automobiles. I am a realist artist and have trouble with abstract subjects. Hit and miss is my technique.
The first thing to decide is to find your medium and that means give anything a try. Then paint what you like because let’s face it, you paint subjects you enjoy. Learn from your mistakes and don’t give up
I joined Salisbury Art Society in March of 1991 and the best thing about this group is that I am with likeminded souls
